The sequel to Brothers in Arms : Road to Hill 30, Earned in Blood is basically the same game, but with a new story, and a couple new weapons, and some new enemy artillery and vehicles. Basically just an expansion pack. It's a solid game, fun and challenging, but not that 10/10 that the original was.
Since this is an expansion pack, I'd have liked to have seen a few more weapons. The game adds the M3 Grease Gun, and the German FG42 paratrooper rifle, in normal and scoped varieties. The M3 is a fun addition, and works well fired from the hip. The FG42 is also fun, the scoped version in particular is very effective. Good additions, but more would have been welcome.
German “eighty eight” Flak guns were also added, providing a heavy gun with crew to build into missions. All the BiA games do a good job of creating crewed weapons in which the soldiers manning the weapon recognize that they've been flanked, or are about to be assaulted, and disperse to fight on foot. German APCs were added as well, although I found their implementation a bit odd. They drive around with a MG42 firing from the crew compartment, and are basically invulnerable to small arms fire in this mode, and very dangerous to infantry, but eventually the crew will get out and run around on foot, where they're easily killed.
The maps were good overall, with a lot more dense cityfighting than in the previous game, but with a rather irritating focus on finding stashes of Panzerfausts for killing tanks. I found this element of the game rather irritating. Quite a few times, I was forced to run around like a maniac, locate a crate of Panzerfausts in a shell crater, and begin spamming them into some nearby Panzer. It generally takes 3-4 good hits to kill a Panzer, and it tends to sit there, acting confused while you use cover it could easily reduce with its cannon. If there's anything that lost BiA:EiB its 10/10, it's the Panzerfaust spamming. Panzerfausts were very effective on contemporary tank armor. The mechanic in BiA is that the soldier can only carry two weapons, including Panzerfausts. I think BiA would be a lot more fun if a little more realism was worked in here. No crates of everlasting Panzerfausts. Instead, the player can opt to carry one instead of a second gun, and can use it to kill a tank with a single good hit. Much like real life.
BiA:EiB is a good game that expands on the original with a bit more content, but suffers somewhat from having to come up with new ideas, when the simplest and best ideas had already been used.
