Sweet mother of mercy is Jack Idema insane. Apparently Idema and his supporters have seen fit to create their own website, much of which is focused on railing against Soj's weblog, which has a section on Idema.
The theme of the “Super Patriots'” website appears to boil down to this: “A Storm is Coming, and Hell is Coming With it.” By “storm” they mean “meritless civil suits,” or possibly “physical violence in 8-10 years when we get out of Afghan prison.” Throughout this website, there's a lot of this sort of language. Lots of militaristic big talking, lot's of grandiose claims. The site describes Idema's capture, and why he went without a fight, (based largely on his own words) thusly: “They were not about to get in a shootout with people they thought were their allies. If there had been a shootout, they would have easily killed everyone, and we do mean easily. Jack and his men had enough rockets and machineguns, all deployed around their compound, to decimate an enemy force of at least 200+ within minutes.” Uhhh, great. That's not how real deal combat operators talk, guys. That's how angry goth kids talk.
Idema himself produced this gem: “I am a Green Beret, not a candy striper, or a wannabe, or some fake drunk at a bar claiming all his missions were classified and he has to kill you if he talks about it. I've come close to killing bin Laden twice, and found him five times, and that makes me better at this than the FBI, and a lot of other people.” Urk. He assures me he's the real deal, never mind the fact he used to be heavy into paintball, and then he goes on to claim he's done stuff the American military can't do. It's beyond comprehension. He seems aware that people might think he's a fake, but he assuages those fears by launching into the most ridiculously improbably series of claims he's fevered mind could concoct. Notice, also, the “I am a Green Beret.” Over and over this is repeated throughout the site. He thinks this is major cred. Everyone I've ever known that had any real combat experience, any real military cred, was either unwilling to speak about it at all, or would only do so if directly questioned. Idema reminds you he's a former Green Beret every few paragraphs. It's comically juvenile, and transparently insecure. A real Green Beret knows that no amount of guns will allow a half dozen guys to hold off 200+, much less 'kill them all in minutes.' A real Green Beret knows he's mortal, knows he's not a super hero, and knows that talk is cheap.
I really wonder what he's deluded himself into believing counts as “coming close to killing bin Laden.“ I have half a mind to strap on my carry Glock, and walk around my house, pretending that bin Laden just left the room I entered a moment before, so I can be the star of my own personal Idema Action Fantasy. Maybe I'll even clean some of my rifles, and pose in front of the mirror with my M-96.
Still, I must admit a certain amount of interest in what Idema's real situation is. It does appear that he's being treated rather well, considering he's in an Afghan prison. I find it hard to believe that his con-artist act would fly with the sorts of folks who run things in Afghanistan. These aren't the most modern folks, but I'd think they're sharp enough to see through Idema's act in a second. Perhaps he did succeed in conning enough of them to secure himself better treatment, and loyalty from a certain number of hired Afghani guns. More likely the Afghan government wants to treat him well, lest it reflect poorly upon them in the world community.
As a final note, please compare and contrast Idema's words and his site to the words of Ben Thomas, who is a security consultant (aka. a mercenary) working in Iraq. Decide for yourself which seems more legitimate.
