Animation is getting better and better these days, and The Incredibles has some pretty incredible rendering going on. That was a horribly E! sort of intro, and I feel sort of dirty for typing it, but the movie looked good, and I said it, so deal.
This was a cute movie. The idea of a “retired” superhero, trying to fit into the suburban world, is a nice vehicle for a film. There's really nothing wrong with this film to attribute the two lost points to, I just didn't see it as a 10/10 sort of movie. It was cute, there were some humorous moments, some clever superhero fight scenes, the characters were likeable, it just didn't have a 10/10 feel for me.
One thing I did like about it, was the theme of “exceptional” vs “average.” On one hand, this was really the central motivation of the villain. He wants to 'make everyone incredible, which means that nobody is.' In many ways, this movie's moral is backlash against the whole 'everyone is unique and beautiful' bullshit that our society has been flinging around lately. On the other hand, it's very much downplayed, and only mentioned enough to give a general idea of it, which makes me wonder if the forces of clownishness in Hollywood didn't force the writers to turn down the volume on that particular theme. I suppose if The Incredibles wanted a 10/10 vote from me, it'd have done a little more to push that theme to the fore.
